Oh, Alan Alan

Goalkeeper Alan Stevenson is the special guest tonight but tonight must be a first because he is currently employed by tonight’s visitors Coventry City.

Alan moved into the commercial side of football shortly after leaving the Clarets, he took on the Commercial Manager’s role at Hartlepool, and he is currently employed by Coventry City as Commercial Director working alongside Paul Fletcher who is responsible for the new stadium.

Stevo joined the Clarets back in 1971 when Jimmy Adamson paid Chesterfield over £50,000 for his services and for the next eleven years and more he was our first choice keeper other than a short time when Gerry Peyton took over.

He made 438 league appearances for us and that fell just one short of the post war record that is still jointly held by John Angus and Jimmy McIlroy.

During his time at Burnley he won England Under-23 honours and on one occasion even went up front when England were left with only a goalkeeper sub and a player coming off injured.

A full cap never came his way but he got as close as it is possible to get when he was on the subs bench against Portugal in Lisbon back in 1974 on the night that Martin Dobson made his England debut.

He’ll get a superb reception from those Burnley fans who can remember him, a top keeper for the Clarets.
