Brendan O'Connell in action for Charlton against Liverpool
Dave Cooke was assistant but has moved on with Jimmy Quinn to Shrewsbury and Davis turned to someone he knows well.

O’Connell signed for the Clarets in the summer of 1988 from Exeter City and was an instant success with goals as we started the season so well. But things tailed off and he became the target of the boo boys.

Things got so bad during his second season that he went out on loan to Huddersfield with Junior Bent coming the other way and at the end of the loan spell was sold to Barnsley.

Just over two years later Davis and O’Connell were re-united when the former signed for the Tykes and they both played a part as Barnsley progressed towards the Premiership. Both players won Player of the Season awards at Oakwell.

It was Charlton and Wigan for O’Connell after that before injury ended his career prematurely and now he moves to Northwich to join up with the former Burnley skipper.
