Not a penny spent

Carl Robinson - moved from Wolves to Portsmouth
As the court case against Carlton and Granada got underway it was more a case for most clubs of making do or even trying to sell players to raise funds although one or two transfers did go through.

Wolves were at the centre of the two main deals with one player coming in and one player leaving. They signed Manchester United full back Denis Irwin who has moved to Molineux for one last year as a player. Irwin, now 36 and linked with Burnley last year, is comfortable both at right-back and left-back and will probably come in to replace Kevin Muscat on the right hand side.

With one international in another one left when Welsh midfielder Carl Robinson signed for Portsmouth on a free transfer. He becomes Harry Redknapp’s sixth signing of the summer at one of the few clubs in the division that have any money to spend.

That’s it as far as incoming transfers are concerned but three players have moved on elsewhere. Coventry midfielder Paul Trollope has signed for Northampton Town on a free transfer whilst Matthew Gadsby of Walsall has gone to Mansfield. The 22 year-old defender has signed for the newly promoted Notts club on three months loan.

Some possible good news for beleaguered Bradford City, Benito Carbone has got himself fixed up back in Italy. This week he signed a contract to play for Como in Seria A back in his native Italy. It remains to be seen whether that means he will be prepared to accept a smaller pay off from the Valley Parade club who are still in administration and struggling to survive.
