Not a good night for Alexander and Caldwell

Steven Caldwell
Steven Caldwell - first international start in over four years
Alexander was making his 39th appearance for Scotland, utilised in the midfield holding role he plays so successfully for the Clarets. Caldwell came in to partner his brother Gary in the centre of the defence in what was his first appearance in three and a half years and his first start in over four years.

He saw brother Gary sent off in the first half, the free kick leading to Norway's first goal, and a second at the end of the first half left Scotland with a mountain to climb. Just over two minutes into the second half Caldwell was substituted after appearing to signal to the bench that there was a problem.

With Michael Duff out injured and David Edgar suspended it is to be hoped there is nothing serious or we could have defensive problems for our season opener at Stoke.

Alexander played the full ninety minutes with the Scots conceding two more goals in the second half.

There was also a cap for Martin Paterson. He was named as a substitute for Northern Ireland in Belfast for the friendly against Israel. The game ended 1-1 and Pato came on for David Healy in the 64th minute.
