Nogan retires

Former Burnley striker Nogan was released by his home town club Cardiff at the end of last season after not making a single first team appearance. He had been suffering with injuries and he has finally admitted that time is up just a week after his 32nd birthday.

He joined the Clarets in 1995, a £350,000 signing by Jimmy Mullen, and after a slow start became a big crowd favourite at the Turf. He was scoring goals on a regular basis and hit the twenty league goal figure in 1995/96 season.

The following season started in the same way but he was suddenly left out of the team after a disagreement with Adrian Heath. Things went from bad to worse and he was eventually sold to Preston but not before he had become public enemy number one.

He even went on the Radio Lancashire Football Phone In to complain about his poor salary, way above that of most of the fans, and with a couple of expeditions after the pubs had closed the fans really turned against him.

He made matters worse by scoring on just about every occasion he played against us for Preston, something he had also done on a regular basis for his previous club Brighton, and the abuse got worse and worse. On moving to Cardiff he even tried to claim a goal against us there but it was eventually recorded as an own goal.

He would never be a popular player to return to make the half time draw but he was a player who could and should have done so much better in the game. That opportunity has now passed him by.
