No more rip off for away fans

Madejski Stadium - will we get a fair deal there next season?
In the last couple of seasons we have fallen foul of tricks played by such as Walsall and Reading that have seen Burnley fans paying more than they should have done at these grounds and although not foolproof the newly passed league rule will go someway to preventing clubs from ripping off travelling away supporters.

Clubs will now have to submit a pricing plan to the league showing ticket prices for all areas of their ground. The league will ensure this plan does not allow the club to charge visiting supporters higher prices for accommodation in comparable zones to the home supporters.

If visitors have use of the only standing area in the ground they should be charged 10% less than the cheapest covered seat, but visiting supporters may be charged more if they occupy accommodation that is of a higher standard than home supporters, provided the added charge is no more than 10%.

The pricing plan will be circulated to all clubs in the relevant division and no changes will be allowed unless the consent of the visiting club is given.

Hopefully this will put an end to Reading’s £3 off scam for home supporters only on online sales and away supporters will need to be very diligent next season to ensure clubs are adhering to the rules.

The Football Supporters Federation have played a big part in the new ruling and they should be congratulated for forcing the league into taking action against clubs who have been ripping off away fans, something Burnley were guilty of until three years ago.

Unfortunately the new ruling hasn’t gone as far as to prevent clubs from charging more on the day than they do in advance, as Burnley will do next season, nor has it done anything to prevent clubs from charging more for refreshments to away supporters, pies at Rochdale for example were 40p more for away supporters than home supporters last season.
