No more phantom goals at Watford

Last updated : 04 April 2014 By Tony Scholes

The first villain of the peace was assistant referee Nigel Bannister who somehow, and incredibly, thought a goal had been scored when the ball went nowhere near the goal, and flagged as such. The second villain was referee Stuart Attwell from Nuneaton, who actually backed his assistant and awarded a goal.

An own goal was given against John Eustace which the player described as shocking, ridiculous and embarrassing. Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd likened it to aliens landing from outer space, so bizarre was the decision. The ball did actually cross the line, but over two yards wide of goal.

So poor was the decision that Reading generously offered to replay the game but the Football League wouldn't permit it.

It was one of any number of gaffes from Attwell who, by then, was unbelievably being allowed to referee in the Premier League. It took until February 2012 for the authorities to call time on him refereeing at the top level.

Since that day, over five and a half years ago, on a day when he yellow carded former Claret Jon Harley and future Claret Andre Bikey, he has never refereed Watford again, neither home or away. That is until tomorrow.

Attwell will be back at Vicarage Road, facing the wrath of the home fans, for the first time as he leads out the home team and the Clarets.

It's his second Burnley game this season having previously taken charge of our home game against Sheffield Wednesday back in January.

It will be his eighth Burnley game, all since that infamous day at Watford. Despite all the howlers we've had from him over the years we've generally got away with it and overall he's not done too badly when refereeing Burnley. Hopefully we'll still be saying that this time tomorrow.

This season he's refereed a total of 32 games. His card count has gone into three figures with 103 yellow cards and nine red cards. Of those yellow cards 46 have gone to home team players with 57 to away team players.

His last game was the League One 0-0 draw last Saturday between Tranmere and Carlisle at Prenton Park. Tranmere's Ian Goodison and Jake Cassidy were the two players yellow carded.

Tomorrow? Hopefully not phantom goals and, no matter what the result, a game that doesn't leave us talking about the referee.

The assistant referees are Joe Clark (West Midlands) and Richard Hulme (Somerset). The fourth official is Football League referee Andy Woolmer (Northamptonshire) whose last Burnley game was the home game against Coventry in April 2012.
