Steve Cotterill - keen to give young players a chance
Cotterill has said he is keen to give young players an opportunity and on the day he was appointed told Clarets Mad how he had spotted the potential of Michael Duff and Kris Commons at Cheltenham and Stoke respectively and given them their chance.

But for now he needs to concentrate on the first team situation and so Terry Pashley (Youth Coach) and Jeff Taylor (Centre of Excellence) have been told to continue until the new manager has the opportunity to chat to them.

Burnley’s youth system used to be the best there was but that was many years ago. Today we don’t seem to be able to match clubs somewhat smaller than ourselves. The number of players who have come through to the first team in recent years is a poor return.

Since Micky Phelan was sold to Norwich in the summer of 1985 only one player to have come through the youth system at Burnley, John Mullin, has brought the club a transfer fee and not many have made it into the first team on anything like a regular basis.

It is something the club want to change even though a return to the 50s and 60s is unlikely and it is a task that the manager is keen to take on board just as soon as he can. For now though it is business as usual with Terry Pashley the only coach at the club to remain.
