No go Deeney

Deeney has just been released by Notts County having refused to sign a new deal and although he made his debut for Conference outfit Burton a week ago was Turf Moor bound for a trial, hoping to fill the gap left by Danny Coyne’s cruciate ligament injury.

But after obviously seriously looking for a replacement for Coyne, by bringing in Deeney, manager Steve Cotterill has decided to gamble and continue with just one fit goalkeeper in Brian Jensen.

Again on Saturday we had no goalkeeper on the bench and following the departure of Deeney, Steve said, “We will probably go with what we’ve got at the moment, just like we did last season. I don’t think we’ve got money to spare on a goalkeeper who we might not use.”

It was thought that he might look to bring in a replacement, simply as cover for Jensen, with Coyne ruled out for the entire season and perhaps beyond, but we will now continue without cover, and without a substitute goalkeeper, and presumably will look to sign a keeper on loan should an emergency arise.

Meanwhile Deeney couldn’t help Burton to a result, they were beaten 2-0 at Edgar Street in a game that saw former Burnley goalkeeper Craig Mawson on the subs bench for Hereford.
