No cash windfall for Burnley

It is just over a year since the Clarets sold the young Greek striker for a knock down fee with his contract having just one more season to run.

The decision was taken given that the player would now have been walking away for nothing had we kept him and the fact that he would have continued to be back in Greece half the time. At the time manager Stan Ternent said he had no regrets in selling him.

The fee was nothing like as high as initially reported but a sell on clause was included although the actual figure was never released by either club and would probably not be anything like as high as the 25% suggested.

The excitement has come about because there have been reports that he could well be set to leave his homeland again and head back to Portugal, the scene of the Greek triumph last week, and this time in a £4 million move to Porto.

However, there seems to have been some confusion and the Greek player the Portuguese club are interested in signing is actually 23-year-old full back Giourkas Seitaridis. They want him to replace Paolo Ferreira who has followed his coach Jose Mourinho to Chelsea.

It appears that the technical director of Panathinaikos Velimir Zajec has set a price of €40 million on the young defender.

There has been no suggestion that the European Champions are set to sign former Claret Papadopoulos and indeed got the forward they wanted this week with Hélder Postiga returning from Spurs.
