Nik the Greek gets international call up

When Nik Michopoulos joined Burnley early last season he had already won thirteen caps for Greece and in a number of games demonstrated why. There were to be no further call ups though during this period of good Turf Moor form.

The Greeks played England back in September at Old Trafford and whilst Dimitri Papadopoulos played and scored at Ewood in the Under 21 game there was no place in the full squad for Nik despite the naming of three goalkeepers.

A lot has happened since starting with the calf injury he picked up at Cheltenham in January. That kept him out of the side for some time and when fit he couldn't win his place back with loan keeper Marlon Beresford there.

When Marlon went back to Middlesbrough he was back in the first team but has looked anything like an international keeper, at times he has looked as though he has never kept goal before. At Portsmouth and Grimsby he gave goals away going for balls with his feet rather than his hands and just about got away with the same thing in the home games against Gillingham and Coventry.

He is no longer the crowd favourite of a year ago and with a new goalkeeper set to come in during the summer, with Marlon the fans choice, he could find himself playing reserve team football next season.

Things are not quite so good for Nik then just now. That was until today when out of the blue he was recalled to the Greek squad for two internationals next month against Romania and Cyprus. Both games are at home on 12th and 15th May in Alexandroupoli and the island of Rhodes respectively. Let's hope that he can refind his form and get himself a game to add to his previous caps.

Congratulations Nik.
