Newell sacked

Newell has been on the brink a few times after publicly criticising the club, and earlier in the season he had some very harsh words for his Chairman at the time the Luton board were distancing themselves from his comments on assistant referee Amy Rayner.

This week, an argument with Leeds boss Dennis Wise raged over the Kevin Nicholls affair but Newell again attacked his employers over the sales of Curtis Davies, Rowan Vine, Carlos Edwards, Steve Howard and Kevin Nicholls.

"The reason we are in the position near the bottom of the table is because we have sold our best players, but where's the £9 million gone that we got for those players? Give that money to me and I'll get five experienced players in. I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.

"It takes three our four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them."

This latest outburst looks to have been the straw that has broken the camel's back and Luton Town today decided to dispense with the manager who was appointed in the summer of 2003 after a somewhat strange fans' vote.
Luton have become the eleventh Championship club to change manager this season.
