Never Had It So Good

Last updated : 07 October 2009 By Tony Scholes

The book, entitled Never Had It So Good is written by Tim Quelch the author of Forever and Ever and charts our magnificent Championship season of 1959/60.

Eight members of the team - John Angus, Ray Pointer, Bobby Seith, Jimmy McIlroy, Adam Blacklaw, Brian Pilkington, Trevor Meredith and Jimmy Robson - have helped put the story together and have given Tim first hand experiences of the secrets of their success e.g. the free kick scams, training routines and their style of play.

Jean Seith and Sheila Blacklaw give a take on what life was like for a 'WAG' in the late fifties and the daughter and grandson of Billy Dougall speak about how, as club physio, he supported the team (and Jimmy Mac in particular) through the triumphant season.

The book includes some wonderfully vivid memories of long standing supporters and also covers how football has changed over the last fifty years. It also accounts for life in Burnley at the time with mounting angst over both cotton and coal production, amplified by the political posturing in the General Election of 1959 and more generally in Britain just ahead of the swinging sixties.

The book includes around 100 photographs of the time including some previously unseen action shots.

It is being published by Know the Score Books and Tim himself has pledged all profit for the book will go to youth development at Turf Moor, the first of two books over the next year to make such a pledge.

There will be more details on the book as soon as we have news of the release date. This is a book I just can't wait to read.
