Natural Born Claret is at the Turf

It was April 1987, as the Clarets teetered on the brink, when Payts made his debut for Hull City, coming on as a substitute at Stoke for Garry Parker. A few months later he got his first start, and with it came his first goal.

The 1990/91 season saw him score 25 league goals, a record that he was to break nine years later, and in the following season his goals earned him a move to Middlesbrough. From there he played for Celtic, Barnsley and Huddersfield before arriving at Turf Moor as part of Chris Waddle's most inspired decision as Burnley manager.

He was a player who wore our shirt with great pride, it meant as much to him as it did to us, and he also chipped in with a few goals. His goals kept us up in 98 and 99 and then a year later he scored no fewer than 27 league games as we won promotion. It was his best ever season, and fell only two short of Willie Irvine's post war Burnley record.

His first team appearances became sporadic after promotion, in almost two and a half years he didn't start a first team game, and in the summer of 2003 he retired from the game after his release from Burnley.

His record at Hull suggests he should get a good reception from the visiting fans, and we all know what sort of reception he'll receive from the home stands. Local lads don't often come good at Burnley, eventually our Natural Born Claret did.
