He has not only scored goals for fun until he lost his place but he is also a real Clarets which means the relationship between him and the fans is that bit more special. He scored the winner on his home debut for us and for the next three years as a first team regular he just carried on.
So Payts takes his place alongside Gareth Taylor, the two of them have never started a game together in reality but Payts gets the opportunity in our team after polling 76.4% of the vote. In fact for much of the week he had an 80% plus total but there was a late flurry from Ian Moore that reduced the total to that figure. Moore took that second place with 11% and then way behind in third place was former manager Adrian Heath, a really popular player at Burnley, with just 6.2%.
It was Kurt Nogan next with 3.6% with votes coming from those who remember Kurt’s goals during the 1995/96 season also being relegation saving goals. The Rooster, Kevin Russell, had just a short time at the Turf and he won just 2.2% with Liam Robinson, the big summer signing of 1994 after promotion, way behind on 0.6%.
We have taken a look back at all the polls to select five substitutes and although we have not selected any defenders we have Kevin Ball in there who can play at the back. Three of the subs chose themselves because of the closeness of the polls they were involved in and we have added an extra striker to complete the list.
