Mr. Pompous quits Bradford City

Last updated : 06 August 2002 By Tony Scholes

That has happened today with the news that Geoffrey Richmond, Mr. Pompous, has finally quit Bradford City. Alongside Coventry’s Bryan Richardson he went behind the backs of other clubs in trying to set up the Phoenix League. Meanwhile his club was falling down around him with massive debts.

Last week the creditors of Bradford City accepted 10p in the pound and today the Football League have given them the all clear to carry on as a First Division club for the 2002/03 season. Then came the wonderful news that Mr. Pompous and his place will be taken by Gordon Gibb the boss of the Flamingoland Theme Park.

Pompous said, "I have always said if such a day arrived when I lost the confidence of a significant number of the supporters of this club that it would be the right thing for me to walk away. I believe that time has now arrived."

The Football League have cleared them provided the club’s agreement with the PFA and with Gordon Gibb and Julian Rhodes the prospective owners are finalised. They have until 4 pm on Friday to complete this.

The League’s Director of Communications John Nagle added,

"The League’s Board was extremely impressed by the presentation it received from the club and provided the necessary requirements are now met Bradford City will be in a position to start the new season."

Clarets Mad are delighted with the news from the Football League for the Bradford fans, supporters should not have to go through the nightmare they have just endured.

And Clarets Mad cannot hide its delight at the departure of Mr. Pompous of Bradford – good riddance.
