Being a former Middlesbrough player, Mowbray was always one of the favourites for the job. He was a player with Middlesbrough during their difficult days of the mid 1980s alongside current Burnley boss Brian Laws.
His appointment will be confirmed this afternoon and for Mowbray this will be the fifth club he's managed, following on from his caretaker role at Ipswich and spells at Hibs, West Brom and Celtic.
He already has one promotion to the Premier League as a manager. After missing out in the play offs in 2007 with West Brom, he took them up the following year only for them to be relegated again in 2009.
He'll find some familiar faces in the home dressing room at the Riverside with Stephen McManus, Scott McDonald, Barry Robson, Chris Killen and Willo Flood all having played for him at Celtic and Kevin Thomson at Hibs.
