More transfer speculation

Two names have been under constant discussion over the last few days, one a Premiership player and one a Second Division player who has been linked with us in the past. Pure speculation or not? That's for you to decide.

The Premiership player is one of the biggest names in the game today but he is expected to retire at the end of the season. It is Everton's Paul Gascoigne and Stan Ternent did admit recently that he would love to sign him if he could get him for £1,000 per week. I don't think for one minute we would get him for that sort of money and whether we would be able to attract him at all remains a doubt.

He has been in and out at Everton this season and his most recent appearance was the FA Cup tie against Crewe that ended 0-0. Now 34 he has played 372 league games in his career but whether he is set to end that career at Turf Moor must be considered doubtful.

Last week we reported that Eddie Howe was on his way to Oldham. However Oldham pulled out of the deal after they failed to agree terms with the Bournemouth central defender. Since then he has been linked with both Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic but rumour has it that Burnley are back in for the player who was seemingly linked with us for months during the first half of 2001.

A move to Portsmouth would be convenient for him and would link him with his half brother Steve Lovell but Harry Redknapp has denied any interest. Charlton have been reported as having made a £500,000 move for him but a contact down on the south coast tells me that he believes Burnley have been back in contact with Bournemouth.

Time will tell, and remember we looked almost certain to get him last March, but whether it is Turf Moor or not I do expect Eddie Howe to be departing Bournemouth very soon and probably this month.
