When Jepson left recently, the Doc took joint charge with Iffy Onuora on a temporary basis and put himself forward for the job on a permanent basis. However, a 5-0 thrashing at Swindon this weekend but an end to those chances.
Chairman Paul Scally was so disappointed with the performance that he's offered all Gillingham fans who made the trip two free tickets for a home match of their choice. And this morning he decided to let Docherty go. Scally said: "It was a tough call letting Doc go. He was left in an almost impossible situation and has worked hard for Gillingham so we naturally thank him for that. I've made the decision in the best interests of our football club and I'm getting ever closer to naming our new manager. We wish Mick well in his future career.
Not too many miles from Gillingham, another former Burnley player has lost his job this evening with the news that Millwall have sacked manager Willie Donachie after slipping to the bottom of League One following a 4-0 defeat at Carlisle.
Donachie took over in September last season when Millwall were in a similar predicament. He took them to safety but with things as bad this season the board have somewhat reluctantly decided to dispense with his services.
Deputy Chairman Heather Rabbatts said: "This decision was taken by the board with a heavy heart. We all love and deeply admire Willie Donachie and were desperate for him to bring us the success he so craved. He is in many ways a remarkable man and will be greatly missed by us on a personal level. However, we took the view that, as at the same stage last season, decisive action was necessary in the long term interests of Millwall Football Club."
