Mixed fortunes for the Burnley internationals

Dimitri Papadopoulos - scored the only goal as Greece beat Spain
Dimitri Papadopoulos didn’t just lead the Greek Under 21s to an excellent victory against Spain on Friday night but scored the only goal of the game just six minutes before half time. The victory gives the Greeks a good start to their European Under 21 Championship campaign.

It wasn’t all good news though for the striker who only made his full debut for the Clarets last week, he lasted only hour before having to come off with a head injury. It is not considered serious but could automatically rule him out of contention for the next two games with the strict rules now applied to head injuries.

Over in Helsinki though it was not so good news for Gareth Taylor even though the Welsh turned in a magnificent performance to earn a 2-0 win against Finland and against all the odds. The goals came from Celtic’s John Hartson and Simon Davies of Spurs.

Gareth is still looking for his first international goal and was also hoping to pick up his eleventh Welsh cap. Mark Hughes though started with just Hartson up front. There wasn’t even a place for Taylor on the bench with Craig Bellamy, Robert Earnshaw and Nathan Blake amongst the seven substitutes.

Both will now return to Burnley to prepare for the Worthington Cup tie against Blackpool. Given the second half performance yesterday I suspect at best both will have to settle for places on Stan’s subs bench.
