Miller on Boxing Day

Last updated : 23 December 2005 By Tony Scholes

If nothing else, he has been consistent when he has refereed Burnley, he’s turned in nightmare performances on every occasion, but at least it was the opposition doing most of the complaining last time, this being our 4-0 win against Coventry.

Typically they had got away with murder for much of the first half and then conceded a penalty for the most innocuous of challenges. Before Gifton hit the ball into orbit from the spot, they saw their captain Stephen Hughes sent off for protesting too strongly.

Stoke have every reason to remember this referee too, this will be his third Stoke game of the season and they are yet to finish a game with all eleven men on the pitch. He sent off goalkeeper Steve Simonsen in their 3-0 home defeat against Watford and then, again at the Britannia Stadium, he dismissed Michael Duberry as they beat Crewe 2-0.

Coventry and Stoke are not the only clubs to have had players sent off by him, he’s used his red card eight times this season, twice in one game, the League One clash between Doncaster and Swindon.

He’s not been over busy with the yellow cards, just 50 in 21 games to date, and he certainly hasn’t shown any favour to home players with 24 of them going to home players and 26 to away players.

We can only hope that Miller turns in a far better performance than he has done in any one of his four previous Burnley games.

Miller’s assistants will be Craig Barker and Mark Haywood (both Yorkshire) whilst the fourth official duties will be carried out by Bob Roberts (Lancashire).
