Miller – but not Nigel

Pat Miller is currently in his second season as a Football League referee and tomorrow's game will be just his fourth at Championship level, and the first time he's refereed either Plymouth Argyle or Burnley.

He's certainly not joined the league as one of the card happy officials intent on making it to the Premiership via his ability to take over zealous action, and last season in 28 games he handed out just 67 yellow cards and only a couple of red cards, and those two red cards coming in the same game when Boston were reduced to nine men in a 2-1 win at Notts County.

This season has started similarly, and in ten matches so far he has yellow carded 21 players and sent off just one, Gary Breen of Wolves at Cardiff. That was a controversial decision, it was for an elbow early in the game and Wolves went on to lose 4-0. They appealed and won, with the elbow being considered to be a complete accident.

The one concern is the number of cards that go to away players, and despite an evening up in the last two or three weeks he has still cautioned just seven home players and fourteen away players, suggesting that our players are the more likely to get carded.

I don't recall ever having seen this particular referee, so no idea what we can expect generally in terms of the way he referees a game, it is another wait and see – but at least it isn't Nigel.

He will be assisted by Simon Snartt (Gloucestershire) and Stephen Tomlinson (Hampshire) and the fourth official will be Keith Buller (Somerset).
