Midfield crisis hits Clarets

David May - back from suspension to captain the side
It looks as though Paul Weller and Neil Wood will be missing, are we going to pay heavily now for playing Weller last Monday, although Richard Chaplow does have a chance of making it. It is to be hoped he does, the last thing we want right now is a further shortage of players.

With Luke Chadwick still out of favour to the extent that he was sent on and brought off last week he is hardly likely to get in the side with Lenny Johnrose now in front of him for a game.

Elsewhere in the team Dean West is again ruled out, it is unlikely that he will play again this season, whilst up front Dele Adebola, as was seen on Monday, is miles away from being fit but might be able to manager half an hour.

Ryan Townsend has been added to the squad but the 18-year-old central defender will only be used in a dire emergency.

The big question seems to centre on who will play at the back with some pace needed to cope with Robert Earnshaw. Surely David May will come back but it is a question of whether Graham Branch or Mark McGregor drops out with only Branch able to supply the pace that might be needed.

As it happens it might well be that he is needed elsewhere in the side because of the injuries.

It is difficult to determine the line up but it could be something like:

Brian Jensen, Lee Roche, David May, Mark McGregor, Mo Camara, Glen Little, Tony Grant, Lenny Johnrose (or Richard Chaplow if fit), Graham Branch, Robbie Blake, Ian Moore. Subs: Nathan Abbey, Ryan Townsend (or Johnrose if Chaplow plays), Luke Chadwick, Ian Moore, Dele Adebola.

Cardiff will still be without the injured Graham Kavanagh but manager Lennie Lawrence is boosted with the return of three players from injury – Rhys Weston, Willie Boland and Peter Thorne. He hopes to add all three of them to the squad that lost 3-0 at Wigan on Tuesday with Weston and Boland coming through a reserve team game.

Lawrence has demanded better form from his side and insisted that they end the season at least with the two home games won starting with the Clarets.

He will choose from: Martyn Margetson, Gary Croft, James Collins, Danny Gabbidon, Tony Vidmar, John Robinson, Richard Langley, Gareth Whalley, Paul Parry, Alan Lee, Robert Earnshaw, Neil Alexander, Chris Barker, Gavin Gordon, Rhys Weston, Willie Boland, Peter Thorne.
