Micky Phelan played for the Clarets until relegation to the basement division in 1985 and signed for Norwich before making the move to Manchester United and then West Brom.

After his playing career was over he was a coach with Gary Megson at Norwich, Blackpool and Stockport but when Megson moved to Stoke they parted company and Micky took the youth team coaches role at Old Trafford.

Since then he's moved up the pecking order and has been first team coach since 2001 and was also the temporary number two when Carlos Queiroz moved to Real Madrid. With Queiroz having left again he's now been given the assistant manager's role on a permanent basis with Rene Meulensteen becoming the first team coach.

Ferguson said of his new assistant manager: "Mick knows Manchester United inside out, having been associated with the club for the best part of 20 years. He is a very talented and professional coach, whose ability and contribution to the club's success has often been understated."

Burnley fans often find themselves in high places, both in and out of football, and in the game there's probably no higher place than right next to the country's most successful manager.
