Mick McCarthy's Molineux

A number of names had been linked with the job, including something of a wild rumour from the local press in Wolverhampton that suggested it could be Steve Cotterill taking over, but it was something of a surprise when news broke that McCarthy was their man.

It had become reasonably clear that they weren't likely to approach anyone employed elsewhere and it was thought that it was likely to be between acting boss Stuart Gray and Paul Ince. However they both missed out and Gray will actually be leaving the club after tomorrow's friendly against Swansea.

McCarthy has been out of work since losing his job at Sunderland towards the end of last season, after a nightmare in the Premiership following promotion a year ago. He's still to be replaced at the Stadium of Light where they are currently under the stewardship of acting boss Kevin Richardson.

The new man at Molineux will take Ian Evans with him, spelling the departure of Gray, whilst two others have gone including Carl Hoddle, the former manager's brother.

That leaves Colchester, as well as Sunderland, looking for a new boss in the Championship but it would be no big surprise should they just continue with caretaker Geraint Williams.
