Mellon loses job at Barnsley

They've been struggling near the bottom of the league all season and that prompted them to sack manager David Flitcroft at the end of November. Mellon was placed in caretaker charge for the next 17 days during which time they won for the only time away from home, at Brighton, and also played at Turf Moor where a Michael Kightly goal gave us a 1-0 win.

For a time it looked as though he was going to be given the job on a permanent basis but instead they turned to former manager Danny Wilson who had taken them to the Premier League in the 1990s.

Having not been outside the bottom three since mid-September, and currently occupying bottom place, they have taken the decision today to dispense with both Mellon, who has been the assistant manager for just over a year, and goalkeeping coach Ian Willcock.

In a very brief statement, the club thanked both for their services although later the chairman confirmed that the decision had been taken simply because of their disappointing season.
