Mellis & Howieson - the ins and outs

Interest from Liverpool and Newcastle in Cameron Howieson

Mellis was the surprise trialist in the reserves last week at Morecambe, setting up the first goal of the night for Junior Stanislas in a 4-0 win at the Globe Arena.

This week he's had his contract terminated at Chelsea following an incident at their Cobham training ground when he admitted setting off a smoke grenade which caused a full scale evacuation and the necessity for trained fire marshals to be employed.

Team mate Billy Clifford was fined but Mellis was shown the door yesterday and the Mail are reporting that he's continuing to train with the Clarets with a view to making a permanent move to Turf Moor.

Meliis was signed by Chelsea from Sheffield United for £1 million when he was just 16 years of age and has played first team football for Southampton and Barnsley during loan spells.

If Mellis is due to come in, then, and hardly surprisingly, interest is being shown in our youth team with the Mail reporting that New Zealander Cameron Howieson is interesting both Liverpool and Newcastle United.

No surprise there given the fantastic run from the under-18 team and he's hardly likely to be the only player who will be sought by other clubs as we prepare for our semi-final at Ewood Park on Thursday.

I don't see Howieson going anywhere in the immediate future, but the Mellis story looks to have more than a little substance given that he's reportedly still training with us.
