Again, as was the case at Chelsea, it was the defensive unit who came out on top as the Clarets suffered a second successive Premier League defeat, this time against last season's runners up.

Mears was the clear winner in the vote. He polled 35.1% of that vote which was almost double that of goalkeeper Brian Jensen who came in second with 18.9%. It was central defender Andre Bikey who was third with 9.4% of the vote.

The other two defenders were in the next two positions in that vote, but both fared better in the player ratings coming in right behind winner Mears who took top place again with a rating of 6.60 out of 10.

Clarke Carlisle was second with a rating of 6.36 and left back Stephen Jordan took third place, and his rating was 6.04 out of 10. These were the only three players to have a rating higher than the average of 6.

The results from the Liverpool game mean that Mears picks up six points in the Player of the Year Table. Both Clarke Carlisle and Brian Jensen get two points and there is a point each for Andre Bikey and Stephen Jordan.

Bikey still leads the way in the Player of the Year Table with Jensen and Carlisle in the next two places. Mears has now moved into fourth place.

The current table

12: Clarke Carlisle
