Mears and Edgar to lead the way

Tyrone Mears - expected to join the Clarets
News of our interest in the two defenders broke last week and it is now believed they are both close to signing for the Clarets having both agreed to the deals on offer.

Mears will move from Derby in a transfer worth an initial £500,000. There were suggestions at the end of last week that he could still head back to France with Marseille where he spent much of last season on loan, but his agent Willie McKay said Mears' meeting with Owen Coyle was positive and he expects him to become a Burnley player even as soon as today.

Meanwhile, the move for Edgar looks to be very close to being done and dusted. Edgar is out of contract tomorrow night and has turned down the offer of a new deal with Championship club Newcastle and is ready to take the step back up to the Premier League with Burnley.

There will be a fee involved because of his age and that could be decided by a tribunal if the two clubs cannot come to an agreement.

Further up the pitch we have offers in for two forwards. We are awaiting news of our offer for Hibs' striker Steven Fletcher whilst news this morning is that Sheffield Wednesday seem to be doing all they can to price Marcus Tudgay out of a move by slapping a £5 million price tag on his head, leaving the player very unhappy. Unless there is some massive room for manoeuvre there it is unlikely that he will be joining the Clarets.

There has been talk of up to seven new players coming in, Coyle would surely like some of them in before training starts, it is now looking very likely that Mears and Edgar will be there for the first day of training.
