McGhee latest to go in Managerial Musical Chairs

I thought I had reached the point when no sacking would surprise me but quite honestly this one looks almost ridiculous and had Millwall beaten Preston last night they would have been in joint fourth place in the division alongside Sunderland and West Ham albeit from more games.

But it wasn’t good enough for Kebab Seller Theo Paphitis and his board and this morning they terminated the contracts of both McGhee and his assistant Archie Knox with immediate effect although in true football speak they have said it is by mutual agreement as they chose to avoid the word sack.

Paphitis said, "While expectations were high at the start of the season we have failed to live up to them. I would like to thank Mark for his contribution to Millwall over the past two years."

Somewhat surprisingly given the comments of the Chairman he was in fact Millwall manager for three years taking over from the joint managers Keith Stevens and Alan McLeary in September 2000.

In his second season in charge he took Millwall to the Division Two Championship and followed that up by reaching the Division One play offs a year later. That’s when the problems started with the after match problems and the subsequent sanctions against the club.

That, and an horrendous injury list saw them finish last season in ninth place although in mid-March they were as low as 17th and climbed with a fantastic end to the season.

It looked as though they had made a more than satisfactory start to the new season but it was apparently not good enough for the board and neither was it for the fans who have already given the impression that this is good news. Their target though was Knox who they seem to have pointed the finger of blame at.

Millwall will later today appoint a caretaker and who knows they could be yet another club appointing a new man just in time to take on the Clarets.
