Irish boss Don Givens, hardly recognised for his man management abilities and considered a dinosaur who thinks an IPOD is a character from Dr Who, lambasted the Clarets midfielder when Chris told him two hours before kick off that he didn't want to play.

Today Chris has made it clear that he is very much interested in playing for his country and said: "I won't be ringing Don but if he called me up again then I would report for duty. I know that is unlikely to happen.

"Of course I do want to play for Ireland but I was away with the squad for two games and if I'm not being given a chance then what was the point in me being there?

"People might see me in a bad light but I can't go back on it now," he said. "I know I'm good enough to have been in the team. What happened has happened and I just want to leave it at that."
