Chris was called up last week after Blackburn's Keith Treacy had to drop out with an injury but the same has happened to Chris who had to be substituted at the Hawthorns with a leg injury.

It is thought that the injury isn't serious enough to keep him out of Saturday's league game against Colchester but manager Owen Coyle said: "Chris tookadvertisement a knock at West Brom and it was the right decision to bring him off. We are assessing it at the moment, but it was right to remove him from the Ireland squad. He would not have been fit enough to play."

He added: "There's going to be more chances along the way for Chris, I've no doubts about that and what happened before has happened. Chris just wants to play football, whether that's for club or country. He perhaps went about it the wrong way at the time, but that's water under the bridge now.

"He's a terrific young player and I've no doubts that Chris will go on to enjoy a fantastic career at club level, and at international level if he continues to develop. He has all the attributes, and he works hard in everything he does. He's the modern-day footballer."
