May Day

May was released by United at the end of last season and had pre-season up in Scotland with Rangers alongside Sunderland’s Emerson Thome. But the Scottish club decided against signing either of them and he has constantly been linked with a move to Turf Moor recently with Burnley known to be keen to bring in a central defender.

And we couldn’t have got much better than May who has played for one of the top clubs in the world after moving to Old Trafford for a tribunal set £1.4 million in 1994, a transfer that angered then Blackburn owner Jack Walker.

He had been at Ewood Park for eight years as apprentice and professional before making the move and had won a regular place in the side then managed by Kenny Dalglish and the late Ray Harford but despite being a passionate Manchester City fan he took the chance to play for United.

His time at Old Trafford has been hit by injuries and it says a lot about how highly he was rated that despite these injuries they have kept him until this summer. He did though play in well over 100 games for them.

Apart from Blackburn and Man United he also had a short loan spell at Huddersfield around Christmas 1999 when they were up at the top of Division One under the management of Steve Bruce.

Now though, for one year at least, he is a Claret and there cannot be a Burnley fan who won’t be delighted to see him pull on that Burnley number five shirt given the shortage of players we have for the centre of defence.

May has become the fifth signing since the end of last season and the third from Manchester United. He will almost certainly be in the starting line up when we play West Brom on Saturday.
