Mathieson will referee Bury game

Last updated : 12 August 2008 By Tony Scholes
It was Mathieson, back on Boxing Day, who strangely allowed Deon Burton's penalty to stand at the Jimmy Mac end of the ground when he hadn't even checked on whether Gabor Kiraly was ready or not, and wasn't even watching proceedings.

This will be his second Bury v Burnley game, he was in charge of our 4-2 defeat there on Boxing Day 1999 (yes Boxing Day again) when he sent of Steve Davis and booked no fewer than eight players.

I can only suggest he has a miserable time at Christmas because other than those two games he's not caused us many problems and is a very unassuming referee who tends to let the players get on with playing.

Mathieson is not the busiest generally with cards and last season in 35 games he handed out just 62 yellow and 2 red cards. Of those yellow cards 28 went to home team players and 34 to away team players.

He started the 2008/09 season at Ninian Park and Cardiff's 2-1 win over Southampton when the only player carded was Cardiff central defender Glenn Loovens.

Tonight he will be assisted by Michael Naylor (South Yorkshire) and Jason Tyas (West Yorkshire) whilst the fourth official duties will be in the hands of Andrew Hutchinson (Cheshire).
