Mathieson for second time this season

Last updated : 15 April 2005 By Tony Scholes

He was referee when we took on Coventry back in October, a game when we twice came from behind, and it was a night when there were no particular problems from the referee apart from him booking Frank Sinclair somewhat harshly and taking him to a suspension. He did give us a penalty though.

He's not been without his moments in Burnley games and handed out eight yellow and two red cards as we went down 4-2 at Bury on Boxing Day 1999. We could hardly complain at the red card for Steve Davis though, sent off for handling on the line.

Frank was the only booking that night and Mathieson has not been over eager with his cards overall with just 66 yellows and 5 reds in 31 games.

One of those red cards saw Preston’s Claude Davis sent off in a Carling Cup tie at Leicester that upset the somewhat biased Radio Lancashire commentary team and just a couple of weeks ago he sent off former Claret Mark McGregor in Blackpool’s 2-2 home draw with Hartlepool.

Of those yellow cards 29 have gone to home team players whilst 37 have gone the way of away team players, this despite a start to the season when many of the yellow cards were being handed out to the home players.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Martin Robinson (Co Durham) and Gary Wallace (Tyne & Wear).
