Mason again for Clarets

Last updated : 23 October 2009 By Tony Scholes
He was in charge of the 4-0 defeat at Anfield when I think the only thing we could blame him for was getting in the way of the ball and his intervention inadvertently leading to the fourth goal.

But for home fans it is a third Turf Moor appearance to follow the home fixtures against Preston in the last two seasons and there is little we need to say about them, particularly the first of the two in December 2007.

Prior to the game at Liverpool he'd made a very quiet start to the season and had only shown four yellow cards in three games. He added both Chris Eagles and Stephen Jordan to his list that afternoon and has since increased his average with 23 yellow cards and a red card now in eight games.

The player sent off was West Brom's Jerome Thomas in their Carling Cup defeat against Arsenal at Highbury and Mason certainly boosted his yellow card count on Monday with seven of them in the League One Leeds v Norwich game. Of those yellows this season 10 have gone to home team players and 13 to away team players.

Tomorrow his assistants will be Mick McDonough (Tyne & Wear) and Michael Murphy (West Midlands) whilst Football League referee Michael Oliver (Northumberland) will act as fourth official and will be hoping to turn in a better performance there than he did in the middle on his two visits to Turf Moor last season.
