Marriner gets cup tie

Last updated : 02 December 2008 By Tony Scholes
This will be Marriner's third Burnley game and there's no doubt we'll all want to forget the second of them, although that's nothing to do with this performance. He was the referee for our first game of 2008 when we turned in arguably our worst performance for a few years at Blackpool. He received a rating of 74.75 for that game in our Rate the Ref feature on the message board and is currently 15th of 46 referees.

Marriner, from the West Midlands, became a Football League referee in the 2002/03 season and three years later became a select group referee. This will be his third Burnley game and his second at Turf Moor having previously refereed our home game against Southampton in the 2005/06 season.

He's had a busy start to the season. He's refereed just twelve games so far but has yellow carded no fewer than 42 players and he's also sent off five players.

The first of those red cards was one that no one could have had any arguments with at all, Newcastle's Danny Guthrie for that shocking challenge (for want of a better word) on Hull's Craig Fagan.

Since then he's also sent off Middlesbrough's Emanuel Pogatetz in their 3-1 defeat at Manchester United, and that was followed by another shocker, Fulham's Andy Johnson in their home defeat to West Ham.

The other two are Bolton's Gavin McCann as they went down 2-0 at Spurs and in his last match Wigan's Emmerson Boyce in a 2-2 draw at Newcastle. In the case of Boyce it was the decision that was a shocker and not the challenge with the player playing the ball cleanly yet still having to serve a ban because it was a second yellow.

Of those 42 yellow cards 17 have gone to home team players and 25 to away team players. The last time he had a card free game was the last time he refereed Arsenal. That was last season in their away game at Derby. We don't want a repeat of that; Arsenal won 6-2 that day.

He will be assisted by Paul Tierney and Andrew Butler and the fourth official is Football League referee Neil Swarbrick. All three are from Lancashire.
