Marney to the rescue

By Tony Scholes
Wednesday, 28th July 2010
The first of the summer signings, Dean Marney, came to the rescue for the Clarets this afternoon against Accrington with the former Tottenham and Hull City midfielder scoring twice.

Burnley should have played Accrington at the Crown Ground last night but the pitch isn't ready and so the game was moved to Gawthorpe this afternoon and officially played behind closed doors.

All of the available first team squad played but there was no first game for new goalkeeper Lee Grant whilst Andre Bikey and Chris McCann were missing. Whilst McCann awaits a return from the knock he got last week, Bikey has been given some compassionate leave having become a dad again during last week.

The game did signal a return for Martin Paterson who got his first run out since the game at Bury, the first of the pre-season games. He's since been out with an achilles problem but played the first half today.

The Clarets went 2-0 down during the first half, but in a repeat of last season's game we came from behind to draw 2-2 with Marney getting both goals.

Brian Laws said afer the game: "In the first half we looked like we had just stepped off the plane, but in the end I was pleased with the way we settled and responded.

"We passed and moved the ball much better and started to show the standards of which I expect. In the end we created plenty of chances that could have earned us a handsome win.

"That transition was the pleasing thing, along with the two goals from Dean. That means that along with Chris Iwelumo and Ross Wallace, all the new boys have contributed to the tally in pre-season and I am delighted about that."
