Managerial role for Cooky
Last updated : 14 June 2006 By Tony Scholes
It's three years since he left the Clarets, his last game coming at home against Bradford City when an injury forced him off early in the game and brought his season to a premature end. He moved on tot Stanley, initially as a player and then player/coach before decided to end his playing career.
He went out with a testimonial and today has taken over from Liam Watson and becomes the first full time manager at Haig Avenue since Hugh Fisher in 1978. It was Fisher in charge when they lost their league status, being replaced by Wigan, despite ending the season seven points clear of bottom club Rochdale who succeeded in being re-elected.
They ended last season in eighteenth place in the table and that led to the club and Watson mutually agreeing to leave after three seasons in charge, despite the fact that he'd lifted them two divisions from the Unibond League in his first two seasons.
Cooky will find one familiar face from his Burnley days when the players report for pre-season training, central defender Earl Davis has been a regular in the side since joining them in 2004.
I'm sure we'll all be wishing Cooky all the best and will be keeping an eye on their results next season.
