Mahon says NO to Clarets

We can also confirm that he is a player we have tried to sign in the last few days but Mahon has himself turned us down. He had a choice of four clubs, three in Division One, and one in Division Two and has opted to sign for the lower division club.

He has agreed today to sign for Cardiff City in a 3 month loan deal after he was given an ultimatum by the Welsh club of sign by tonight or forget it. He will be with the Cardiff squad at Port Vale tomorrow but the signing could be delayed until later in the week. If this is done it will mean he is available for Cardiff’s big clash with Wigan in April.

We are just one of three clubs in our division who he has snubbed, the others are Coventry City and Walsall but the move to Cardiff could have been called off even before the deadline when his agent tried to change it to a one month deal.

Cardiff say he wanted to join them ahead of the others but his agent was holding things up whilst Sourness said, "We are happy for him to join Cardiff City. They were always the favourites.

Missing out on Mahon follows closely behind the near signing of Sean Thornton from Sunderland. That looked a likely move just a couple of weeks ago but is out of the question now with the Irish midfielder having come into the Sunderland first team in the last few days and given two excellent performances against Bolton and Everton.
