Magilton gets Ipswich job

Royle left the club just over three weeks ago after over three and a half years in charge and the search began for his replacement. It didn't prove to be too easy as Colchester refused them permission to speak to Phil Parkinson whilst the likes of Tony Mowbray, Nigel Pearson and Colin Calderwood all turned them down.

It was late last week that Northampton boss Calderwood spurned the chance of a move into the Championship and instead opted for a move to Nottingham Forest and that left the Ipswich board turning to Magilton who has just ended his playing career at Portman Road after seven seasons.

George Burley paid Sheffield Wednesday almost £700,000 for the Irish midfielder but at the age of 37, and after over 300 games for the club, the crowd favourite wasn't offered a new deal. But now he's back and has signed a two year deal as the club's new manager and he will be assisted by Brian Klug, who has until now been the academy director at Portman Road.

That leaves Crystal Palace, Preston, Stoke and Sunderland in our division looking for a new manager less than nine weeks from the start of the new season.
