Lewington in charge at Watford

New Watford boss Ray Lewington
Peter Taylor, the man who has become a legend in his own mind, was strongly linked with the job around a week ago but then the talk seemed to move away from the former Southend, Gillingham, Leicester and Brighton boss.

By early this week it was only the lack of an official statement from the club that was preventing Arsenal's Tony Adams' name being put up on the manager's office door. The whole world seemed to know it was him but the club just said they wouldn't comment on speculation.

It all seemed rather strange given that the main reason for Vialli, Wilkins and others going was given as cost cutting. Surely in those circumstances a cheaper option would be more likely.

That has proved to be the case and today they gave the job to last season's reserve team boss Ray Lewington who has been at the club just a season. He was previously manager at Brentford but was persuaded by Vialli and Wilkins to move to Vicarage Road. Lewington had worked for a short time with Wilkins and Crystal Palace.

Lewington was one of nine candidates interviewed by the club and after holding the job as caretaker since Vialli's departure has now been given the job on a permanent basis although no details as to how long the contract is have been given.

That just leaves Brighton as the only First Division club without manager as they continue to look for a replacement for The Legend.
