Letter of the Laws

Last updated : 29 December 2006 By Tony Scholes
It is the first time our paths have crossed since our 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on April Fool's Day, a day when his assistants were called Law and Lawson. He had a decent enough game that afternoon and caused neither side any problems with major errors.

That was something of a relief to the Burnley fans who have seen their side fall victim to these particular Laws of the game more than once. In his previous Burnley game he had wrongly sent off Wayne Thomas and going back eight years before that the whole problems started with the ludicrous sending off of David Eyres in a home draw against Gillingham.

Then there was Scunthorpe, Sheffield United, Grimsby, Gillingham again, Leicester and Preston that have made this particular official one of the less favoured for Clarets. Of all of these games perhaps there was at least one funny episode when Stan Ternent spent some of the half time interval berating him on the pitch, an incident that saw the police intervene.

To this season, and he was referee at the Blackpool v Carlisle game on Boxing Day and issued five yellow cards in that game, but that's above average for him this season. In 18 games he's handed out 61 yellow cards and 4 red cards. Of those cards, 26 yellows have gone to home players and 34 to away players, but three of the red cards have seen home players sent off. The most recent of those red cards was last month when he dismissed Barnsley's Kyel Reid, a second booking for a goal celebration, in their 2-0 home win against Southend.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Gary Mellor (Yorkshire) and Garry Wallace (Tyne & Wear) whilst we'll have something of a superman acting as the fourth official, it will be Christopher Reeves (Yorkshire).
