Les Shannon - on his last visit to Turf Moor
Les retired a year before Burnley lifted the title after over 280 league and cup appearances for the Clarets at inside forward and wing half.

Burnley had signed him from his home town club of Liverpool and after retiring as a player he went on to work as a coach and manager both at home and abroad before ending his active football life as a scout with Luton Town.

Just a few short years ago some friends of mine met him by chance at a game and he still talked very enthusiastically about Burnley. He said then that he would love to return to see a game at Turf Moor. Despite failing health I was able to help make that a reality for him and he was at the last game of the 2005/06 season against his last club Luton Town along with members of his family, and at half time was introduced to the crowd.

I know that was a very special day for Les and it was also a real treat for me to finally meet him, and the letter I received from him is one I'll always treasure.

My thoughts and prayers are very much with his family and friends at this sad time.
