Leicester cup final star to make draw

Andy Lochhead is seen at the Turf on a regular basis, looking after the sponsors and, along with Willie Irvine, running the ground tours before the game.

He started his career with the Clarets and made his debut at the start of the season following the Championship win but it was another two years before he won a regular place in the side, initially partnering Ray Pointer before the emergence of Irvine during which they smashed all goalscoring records.

Andy was far more than a goalscorer, he was big and strong, superb in the air and was able to look after himself. Ask Mike England who he taunted on one superb night as we hammered Blackburn to the point that England got himself sent off.

Former Everton centre half once described him as his more difficult opponent. “You always give the centre- forward a kick early on,” said Labone, “But instead of moaning Lochhead used to come and kick you back twice as hard, and twice as often.”

Andy was the last Burnley player to score 100 league goals for the club, achieved against Leeds at the end of the 1967/68 season and no one would have guessed that the then captain of Burnley would a year later be playing in an FA Cup Final for Leicester.

He scored just one more goal for the Clarets before moving to Filbert Street in October and although winning a regular place and playing in the Cup Final defeat against Manchester City he moved on again sixteen months later signing for Aston Villa who were then in the 3rd Division.

Over three years there, and an appearance at Turf Moor when he scored Villa’s goal in a 4-1 Burnley win before ending his Football League career with Oldham which he followed with a spell in America with Denver.

It still baffles Burnley fans to this day that Andy never did win a Scotland cap during those days in the early sixties when he and Willie were hitting goals every week, tonight Andy will take time off from his current partnership with Willie to take to the pitch again where he can expect a good reception from all four sides of the ground.

Andy recently had his 1969 FA Cup Final medal stolen and it has to date not been recovered. Should you here of its whereabouts please inform the police immediately.
