Leeds United is a joke

Last updated : 02 April 2014 By Tony Scholes

Most of English football is enjoying the goings on at Leeds right now, both on and off the field and it is questionable, right now, which is the worst of the two.

Off the field they await news as to whether potential owner Messimo Cellino has won his appeal after being turned down by the Football League last week; on the field this latest defeat is their sixth in seven games and they've won just once, against Millwall, in the last ten.

Manager Brian McDermott was sacked by Cellino's adviser not too long ago, without authority, before being reinstated, and last week Cellino spoke in hardly glowing terms about the former Reading manager.

After last night's game, McDermott told the Yorkshire Post: "I've been in football 30-odd years and I've never experienced anything like this, I really haven't. Both on and off the pitch. Someone's just said to me that people are saying I should resign.

"Well actually, if people know what's gone on here and what I've had to go through, then to make that suggestion....

"They won't seem me resigning, no way, absolutely no way. It's just a joke when I think about that."

With only half of last month's wages paid, he added: "I'm not finding it easy. There's no doubt about that and it definitely tests you. I've definitely been tested. We've all been tested. The fans have been tested.

"They've been tested here for ten, eleven years. Someone said to me earlier on who'd been a the club a long time, this is as bad as they've seen it."

Leeds are currently in 15th place and sit 12 points above the drop zone, so they shouldn't have any problems there despite going down to a Reza Ghoochannejhad goal, and if Charlton carry on they'll soon be pulling away. They've moved three points ahead of Barnsley with this result, their second away win in a week after they beat Forest by the same score seven days earlier.

At the other end of the table, Leicester edged that little bit closer to promotion with a point from a 2-2 draw at Wigan. I noticed a thread on the message board last night regarding the Leicester team and how they were able to make six changes to the team that had beaten us.

Leicester's late goal left Wigan five points behind Derby in fifth place. Just over a week ago there were posters on the message board hitting the panic button regarding them, but they've won one of their last five games.

The one remaining game was at Ewood, a sort of mid-table fixture I would dare to suggest, although Brighton do still have a chance of making the play-offs. It ended all square at 3-3 with the visitors twice coming from behind to equalise in the last eleven minutes.

It's back to a full fixture list this weekend, kicking off with Leicester's game against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

The results and stats from last night's games are below with the league's leading goalscorers, the red and yellow card counts per club, the highest and lowest attendances and the weekend fixtures.
