Lee sacked at Walsall

The Devon club asked for permission to speak to Lee and this was granted by Walsall owner Jeff Bonser despite the fact that he did not want Lee to leave, apparently he didn’t want him to speak to Plymouth either.

He did speak to them but returned from talks to say that he would not be taking the job if offered, that he did not want to leave Walsall although Plymouth said they would not be making a decision until next week.

Bonser then decided that enough was enough and has terminated Lee’s contract and he along with coach Paul Bracewell have left the Bescot with immediate effect.

Paul Merson has been put in temporary charge for tomorrow’s game at Norwich and he will be assisted by Simon Osborn.

Bonser said, "The decision by Plymouth Argyle FC to delay the announcement of their new manager has created an atmosphere of intense uncertainty at a crucial stage of the season.

"This situation was created by Colin Lee being prepared to talk to Plymouth Argyle about their managerial vacancy just six months after pledging his long-term future to Walsall FC..

"The uncertainty that has been caused has had to be dealt with and I believe this decision to be in the best interests of Walsall FC."

The club did not want Bracewell to leave but he has supported his manager and said, "Colin Lee has brought me to the club to work with him, and it seems right that if he departs, I should go too."

Bracewell would have almost certainly taken temporary charge but that now has passed to Merson.
