League One Leeds set for Turf Moor friendly

Richard Chaplow - opened the scoring last time we played Leeds in a friendly
If there's any consolation, their club is currently in turmoil, and it would be shocking news if Chairman Bates got away with his plan of wiping out debts by paying the creditors 1p in the pound as per his offer. Their actions, and those of Boston, have forced the Football League to consider rule changes for next season.

Whatever, Leeds will be preparing for their first ever season in the third tier of English football, they will have big games against such as Hartlepool, Bournemouth and Cheltenham but have decided to look up the league ladder for some of their pre-season games.

And this morning Burnley have confirmed that we will play Leeds at the Turf in our fifth and last pre-season friendly on home soil before heading for Austria for a week. The game will be played on Saturday 28th July and completes the pre-season schedule for the Clarets.

The last time we played Leeds ahead of a season was in 2003 when the two managers were Stan Ternent and Peter Reid. It was a good game too, with a crowd of over 9,000 seeing the Clarets run out 4-2 winners against a side then in the Premiership. Richard Chaplow and Robbie Blake both scored in open play for the Clarets whilst Blake and Ian Moore netted penalties. The Leeds goals were scored by Mark Viduka and the impressive Alan Smith who shared top billing with Blake.

Blake and Moore were both with Leeds last season, but we can guarantee Moore will not be featuring in the game announced today although Blake could still be with Leeds. The teams in 2003 make interesting reading.

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Lee Roche (Dean West 61), Graham Branch, Arthur Gnohere, Mo Camara, Paul Weller (Tony Grant 61), Richard Chaplow, Glen Little (Alan Moore 61), Ian Moore, Gareth Taylor, Robbie Blake (Matt O'Neill 65).

Leeds United: Paul Robinson, Danny Mills, Ian Harte, David Batty (Stephen McPhail 61), Michael Duberry, Zoumana Camara (Matthew Kilgallon 61), Gary Kelly (Nicky Barmby 61), Jody Morris, Mark Viduka (James Milner 45), Alan Smith (Simon Johnson 85), Jason Wilcox (Rodrigo 45).
