Laws returns to Scunthorpe

Laws will return to Glanford Park tomorrow and going with him is Russ Wilcox who has worked with Laws there before and at both Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley.

Current coaches Neil Cutler, and another former Burnley player Chris Brass, have agreed to remain and discuss their futures with Laws.

Laws was first appointed as Scunthorpe manager in February 1997 and was in charge for over seven years. Boardroom changes saw him leave, with Wilcox taking over, but a month later he was back in charge and spent another two and a half years there before leaving for Sheffield Wednesday.

They were on their way to the Championship at the time with Billy Sharp and Andy Keogh banging in the goals, and the job was completed by Nigel Adkins, a manager himself currently under pressure.

Laws' last job in England was, of course, at Burnley. It never worked for him at Turf Moor and he left in late December 2010 after just under a year in charge.

Hopefully we won't draw Scunthorpe at home in a cup competition. Laws has never been on the losing side as an away manager at Turf Moor, getting good results with Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday.

Scunthorpe reported this morning: "The board are delighted that Brian has returned to our club and feel confident he will be able to restore confidence to our talented squad of players and look forward to progressing quickly towards a more secure position in the league."

Independent web site Iron-Bru.net (part of the Footy Mad group of sites) in confirming his appointment recalled that he'd twice won promotions from League Two with Scunthorpe during his tenure, as play off winners in 1999 and runners up in 2005.
