He followed that up by taking charge of the FA Cup tie at Grimsby and the subsequent replay. He handed out no yellow cards in either game but came under attack from Stan after the 2-2 draw at Blundell Park because of the penalty that he awarded Grimsby.
"I spoke to the referee who said it was a pull. He was the only person on Humberside who saw it. We were fine and comfortable until that decision," Stan said after the game.
He refereed a total of 34 matches last season and only in one other did he not show at least one yellow card. In all he handed out 114 with 4 red cards. Unlike many referees the yellow cards were evenly distributed with 58 for home team players and 56 to away team players.
He does have his big days though and in one game he gave out as many as ten cards.
This season so far he has refereed two games. There were a couple of yellow cards in the 1st Division match between Sheffield United and Gillingham and three in Hull’s Division Three home game against Cheltenham. All five cards have gone to away team players.
He is perhaps best remembered at Turf Moor for his very poor performance in the televised home defeat against Scunthorpe in our promotion season and for sending off David Eyres in the first home game of the 1997/98 season.
